What occasion is it on 20th May? In China, it is a day of love! Essentially, a second Valentine’s day.
How did it come about?
If you pronounce 520 in Mandarin, it is 五二零 (wu er ling), which sounds similar 我爱你 (wo ai ni), which literally translates to “I love you”. Although, you have to use an East China accent to get it close.
From its beginnings as an internet shorthand similar to ILY in English, 520 gained much popularity among young people in China. Couples celebrate it by going on special dates and admirers seize the opportunity to declare their love.
Fun fact: On 5.20, marriage registry centres experience a surge in couples seeking marriage!
